In this game, you take on the role of the commander of the Allied invasion force during World War II. General Eisenhower has stepped down and it is now up to you to lead the tank, airborne, infantry, and air force units to break out of the D-Day beachheads and liberate as much of German-occupied France as possible. Your ultimate goal is to quickly and skillfully encircle German units and defeat both the regular Wehrmacht divisions and the feared Panzer VI (Tiger I) tank units in order to secure a top spot in the Hall of Fame.
You have a wide variety of units at your disposal, including Sherman M4 tanks, American, British, and Canadian infantry divisions, paratroopers, special units like the US Army Rangers and Royal Marines Commando Brigade, special crab mine cleaner tanks, and air force units. On the other hand, the German Wehrmacht starts with coastal fortifications and weak Ost battalions and static infantry units, but as the days pass, they are reinforced with regular infantry and Panzer divisions.
This game offers a condensed and fast-paced version of the classic board game D-Day invasion, focusing on high divisional level strategy and keeping the number of units low enough for quick turns and a faster chance at making it into the Hall of Fame. There are also separate games available for a more detailed experience, such as the "Utah and Omaha" game which simulates the American landings and airborne drops at the battalion level, and the "Juno and Sword" game which models the British-Canadian beachheads and special operations at the battalion level on a larger map.
The game offers a variety of features, including in-built variation and variable-AI technology for a unique experience each time, customizable settings such as difficulty level, hexagon size, animation speed, and icon sets for units and cities, and the ability for experienced units to learn new skills. The campaign also strives for historical accuracy, mirroring the real 1944 Normandy landings and the divisions involved in the D-Day and Normandy Campaign.
As you lead your troops through this intense and strategic game, remember the words of U.S. Army Paratrooper Richard D. Winters, "I never saw so many brave men do so many brave things in one day." And as you strive for victory, keep in mind the words of Winston Churchill, "D-Day was the greatest amphibious operation ever mounted in the history of the world. It was a triumph of planning, execution, and courage."
