More About AD3000 - Orion Master

AD3000 is a turn-based, 4X science fiction strategy game in which the player leads one of ten races to dominate the galaxy through a combination of diplomacy and conquest while developing technology, exploring and colonizing star systems. Victory is gained either by eliminating all opponents or by winning a vote on peaceful unification.

The application is a strategy game that takes inspiration from the original Steve Barcia's Master of Orion. It features 10 playable races, each with their own unique specialties and traits. These races have different relationships with each other and are advantaged or disadvantaged in different research fields. They also have a ruler personality and objective that guides their politics and economic management. Races may even revolt and change their traits, adding an element of unpredictability to the game.

There are 7 normal and 6 hostile planet types in the game. Hostile planets require advanced technology to colonize, but they are also the most likely to be rich in minerals. Mineral wealth greatly affects a colony's industrial productivity, while habitability influences population growth rates. There are also artifact worlds that contain relics of a now-vanished advanced civilization. All planets can be upgraded to Gaia class with the appropriate technologies.

Players can upgrade their planets in three ways: terraforming, soil enrichment, and atmospheric terraforming. Terraforming increases population capacity, while soil enrichment increases population capacity and growth rate. Atmospheric terraforming can convert hostile planets into normal ones, making soil enrichment possible. The planetary management aspect of the game allows players to allocate their colony's output between ship construction, planetary defenses, factory construction, ecology, and research. This requires strategic decision-making as each aspect has its own benefits and drawbacks.

Technology is a crucial aspect of the game and can greatly contribute to a player's success. Players can invest in six different tech tree fields, including Computers, Construction, Force Fields, Planetary Science, Vehicle Propulsion, and Weapons. Advancements in these areas can reduce the cost and size of ship components. Speaking of ships, players can design and use their own ships in the game. There are four hull sizes to choose from, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. There are also eight types of components that can be used to customize ships. However, players can only use six ship designs at a time. Combat in the game occurs in orbit over a planet, and the outcome is determined by numbers, technology, and racial combat bonuses.

The game also offers a wide range of diplomatic negotiations between players. These include gifts of money or technology, one-time technology trades, trade pacts, non-aggression and alliance treaties. Players can also threaten each other, declare war, and arrange cease-fires. The AI players in the game remember previous actions and will be less likely to form alliances with players who have broken treaties with them in the past. Overall, the game offers a complex and immersive experience with various elements to keep players engaged and challenged.
