The main objective of the game is to earn points, with the majority of points being awarded for publishing correct theories. However, this is easier said than done.

The game is played over six rounds, with players choosing their play order at the beginning of each round. Those who choose to play later in the round are rewarded with more benefits. Each round, players declare their actions by placing cubes on different action spaces. These actions allow players to gain knowledge by mixing ingredients and testing the results using a smartphone app. The app randomizes the rules of alchemy for each new game, adding an element of unpredictability and excitement.

In addition to the main goal of publishing theories, players can also earn points by purchasing magical artifacts. These artifacts are powerful but expensive, and can give players an extra boost in the game. However, money is not the ultimate goal for the alchemists. They are more concerned with earning respect and academic prestige.

Throughout the game, players' reputations will fluctuate based on their actions and decisions. At the end of the six rounds, players' reputations will be converted into points. Points can also be earned through artifacts and grants. Finally, the secrets of alchemy are revealed and players will either gain or lose points based on the accuracy of their theories. The player with the most points at the end of the game is declared the winner.
