In BLIMPS, players can load their blimp with various types of cargo, including regular, precious, illegal, and stowaway cargo. They can then deliver this cargo to trading stork ports to earn a profit. However, players must be careful when smuggling illegal or stowaway cargo, as they may get caught by the Eagle Eye Customs.

The game also features various challenges and events, such as Choose Your Own Adventure questions, weather events, dogfight battles, and sieges against seven increasingly difficult castles. Players can also battle against Corporate Cash Cow Bosses, pilot a submarine to collect Helium-3, navigate a hot-air balloon through a labyrinth, and drill for resources with an Earth Drill.

Aside from completing missions and challenges, players can also craft items, extract elements and crush carbon, visit mining operations and drilling rigs, and build solar towns to receive rental income. They can also send and receive pneumatic tube mail, earn captain skill points, and educate and train their expedition team to help them escape.

One unique aspect of BLIMPS is that it features a race against other players to find the Moon Crystal. The first player to find it will win a prize of $1,000,000.
