Talking Stick is a mobile application designed to provide a safe and anonymous space for Indigenous people to connect with trained Peer Supporters. These Peer Supporters are individuals who understand the culture, language, and lived experiences of Indigenous people and are ready to listen without judgment. This app is free to use and does not require any personal information, such as email or phone number, to be shared. It is a judgment-free zone where individuals can seek emotional support, cultural connection, and a sense of belonging.
This app is specifically created for Indigenous people and is available to members from participating Indigenous Nations in Canada and the United States. Users can select their Nation or Region within the app to access culturally relevant support, services, and emergency alerts. Talking Stick offers three main services: Anonymous Chat, Community Services, and Community Safety.
The Anonymous Chat feature allows users to start a text-based chat with a trained Indigenous Peer at any time. These Peers have visible profiles when they are online, allowing users to choose who they connect with. The Peers are available at different times, including day and night, weekdays, and weekends, to ensure that resources are available as often as possible. It is important to note that all Peer Advocates are Indigenous, providing support from someone who understands the user's culture and experiences. No personal information is required to use this feature.
The Community Services feature, also known as Special Teams, allows users to anonymously search and connect with service providers and participating community organizations. This is helpful for those who may feel nervous, afraid, or unsure about how to ask questions about health services, wellness programs, or other resources. These resources are available to answer questions and help users find the right services and support.
The Community Safety feature, known as FirstAlerts, allows users to receive emergency and urgent safety alerts directly from participating Nations and Communities. These alerts can include missing persons, public safety and health emergencies, and urgent updates affecting community members. Users can choose to subscribe to alerts for their selected Nation or Region, and they will receive critical alerts even if their phone is on silent.
It is important to note that Talking Stick is not a crisis service and the Peer Supporters are not crisis counselors or mental health professionals. They do not provide therapy, counseling, diagnosis, or medical advice. In case of immediate danger or crisis, users are advised to call 911. Talking Stick is a valuable resource for Indigenous people to seek support and connection, but it is not a substitute for professional help.
