More About LightBlue® — Bluetooth LE

LightBlue® can connect you to all of your devices that use Bluetooth Low Energy (also known as Bluetooth Smart, or Bluetooth Light). With LightBlue®, you can scan, connect to and browse any nearby BLE device.

The LightBlue® application provides full support for BLE firmware development, making it easier for developers to work with BLE devices. This includes the ability to read, write, and receive notifications from BLE devices. Additionally, the app allows users to view the signal strength (RSSI) in real time, providing an indication of how close they are to the BLE device. This feature can be particularly useful for locating lost Fitbits or other BLE devices.

The app also includes a log feature, which keeps track of all significant BLE events that occur while using the app. This includes device discovery, connection, reading, and writing. This feature can be helpful for developers who need to troubleshoot any issues with their BLE peripherals.

LightBlue® can be used to test a variety of BLE peripherals, such as heart rate monitors, temperature sensors, and keyfobs. It is also a useful tool for developers who want to test the firmware of their own BLE devices.

The app offers a range of key features, including the ability to scan for any BLE peripherals, view basic device information, browse characteristics and services, register for notifications, read characteristics, and write to characteristics in hex or UTF-8 string format. Additionally, the app thoroughly logs all BLE events and allows users to share them in plain text format.

It is important to note that for Android devices running Android M (6.0) and above, the app will require fine location access in order to surface BLE scan results. This is a requirement of the Android SDK and the app does not use this information for any other purpose, even while it is in the foreground.
