AirGuard - AirTag protection

The AirGuard app is designed to protect Android users from potential tracking devices, such as AirTags or other Find My devices. These devices are small and easy to use, making them perfect for tracking individuals without their knowledge. Without proper warning systems, anyone could potentially track your movements by placing an AirTag in your belongings, such as your jacket, backpack, or car.

The app works by periodically scanning your surroundings for any AirTags or Find My devices. If one is detected, it will be saved locally on your device. The app also has the ability to play a sound on the AirTag, making it easier to locate. Additionally, the app keeps track of the locations where the device has been detected, using background location access. However, all location data stays on your device and is never shared with anyone else.

If no one is attempting to track you, the app will not bother you. It only sends notifications if a tracker is detected at least three times and the locations have changed, ensuring that it is not just a nearby neighbor's device. If the tracker is an AirTag, you can use the app to play a sound and locate it.

The AirGuard app is developed by the Technical University of Darmstadt in Germany as part of a scientific research project from the Secure Mobile Networking Lab. The goal of the app is to protect privacy and gather data on how many people are opposed to tracking. Users can voluntarily participate in the research study and share anonymized data with the team.

The app will never be monetized through ads or in-app purchases. It is also open-source, meaning the code is publicly available for anyone to view and contribute to.
